India Overview

The ancient country of India is developing nation with a growing economy. India is the second most populous nation after China, and is the largest democracy of the World. The country has the great Himalayas to its north, and the Indian Ocean to the south. The country gained independence in 1947 from the British rule. At this time it was also partitioned, into India and Pakistan. The most famous spot is the Taj Mahal in Agra, famous worldwide as a symbol of Love. There are fourteen different languages that are popular in India.

Indian Personalities

Mahatama Gandhi is considered as father of Nation by Indians. Recognized worldwide as an apostle of peace, Mohandas Karam Chand Gandhi played a key role in getting India independence from the British Empire through non-violent means.

Indira Gandhi, the first Woman Prime Minister of India was a very powerful leader. She was daughter of India's first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. In 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated.

JawaharLal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India. Nehru was the prime minister of India for 18 consecutive years till his death in 1964. Nehru pursued a foreign policy of non-alignment, and became a founder and leader of the Non-Aligned Movement. Mother Teresa was born in 1910 in Albanian. At the age of eighteen she left her parental home in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta. Starting from 1948 till her death in 1997, she devoted herself to working among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Her organization "The Missionaries of Charity" has provided love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. For her work in Calcutta she was provided Nobel Peace prize in the year 1979.

Viswanathan Anand is a chess Grand Master, ranked number two in the World. The Chess Oscar is awarded to the year's best player according to a world-wide poll. Anand has won the Chess Oscar in 1997, 1998, 2003, and 2004. His four Oscars ties him with Kasparov for the most ever won by a player.

Tourist spots in India

Agra is the city of the Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his bellowed Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal is a white marble tomb and was built from 1631-48. Agra is situated about 200 km south of New Delhi.

Jaipur is the capital city of the state of Rajasthan in the east of India. Jaipur is located 260 km from Delhi and 240 km from Agra, and forms the most chosen tourism golden triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Jaipur is also known as pink city, due to large number of pink buildings in the city. Jaipur is known for its large number of forts and palaces, the main ones being City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Amber and Jaigarh Fort.

Kerala is the Southernmost state of India known for its exquisite beaches. Kerala's herbal spas are popular among visitors from all over the World.

Delhi: The capital city of Delhi is an ancient city known for its historical monuments. Some of the most famous monuments in Delhi are India Gate, Red Fort and Qutab Minar. Delhi also has the Samadhi of Mahatama Gandhi - Rajghat. Delhi is also the gateway to Jaipur and Agra.
